This adorable baby is the little bro to an awfully cute big sis I have photographed twice now (first when she was wee herself), and it was an honour and pleasure to help welcome him to the world. To start with, it didn’t look like Mr S was going to sleep at all, despite being brand new… Perhaps he just found us riveting company? We decided to take him into the studio just to see how he’d do, totally awake, and once there, he was out like a light. Really, really out. Like so out that when we wanted to switch him back on at the end for some wide-eyed shots, it was no way, José.
I love photographing newborns so very, very much. Their sweet milky smells, the softness of their skin, their infinite promise. All is right with the world when one is around them…you just know in your bones that this must be true. Never mind the stress. Never mind the bad weather. Never mind the newspapers. Never mind all the sadness and calumny that befall us all. A baby has been born…so it’s all good.

Mama has kindly answered a few questions:
How old was Mr S when you came in for photographs?
8 days
How was your labour?
13 hrs from start to finish with maybe 2 hours of active labour. I wanted to try not to use the epidural but I could not cope with the pain… I was disappointed but happy with my decision. It didn’t numb all and I still felt every contraction and the baby’s delivery which I was happy with!!
You have an older little girl. How did your labours compare?
With our girl, I had to go through nearly 38hrs of labor and never dilated past 6cm so I had a C-section. I was exhausted from the labor and the C-section so it took me a few weeks to recover and I remember being quite tired. With this delivery, I found it was very hard the first week and had a very sore perineal area… but I recovered fasted.
What is the most special thing about Mr S? That one thing about him that has just grabbed your heart…
I like ++ to look at his face when he sleeps. He looks like a little angel.
How is Ms F enjoying having a baby brother?
I am suprised at how much she seems to be happy to have him around. She likes to kiss him and hug him. She is also curious with all the things that goes with baby like breast feeding and changing diaper.
Are you getting any sleep?
We call our little one the “grunter” as he grunts and grunts at night…. which makes it hard for mum and dad to fall asleep!! But we prefer this to a crying baby!
Any more children on the horizon?
We haven’t closed this option. I have had the chance to have my mother with us for the initial 6 weeks. We will see when she goes how we really adapt to 2!! My husband comes from a family of 4 and it is nice to see how a bigger family offers support with each other and also support for their parents… so maybe yes….
