I had such a good time with Mr C! At five years old, he was a real delight, and I could have photographed him all day. He personifies innocence (and impishness). I was after artistic photos using my new brown boy wings, and Mr C was soo talented at pretending to be sad for me. I photographed Mr C’s baby bro, Mr E, a couple years ago (and actually Mr E is featured in my studio display canvases, so loads of you have “met” him), so it was great to finally shoot the oldest child in the M family. I think I may photograph little Ms A, too, the little girl squashed in the middle of boy sibs, before too long, and I’m really, really looking forward to it.. Apparently she gives impishness a new name, so maybe I will have met my match.
Mr C was a real trooper…it was a cold day outside, but I really wanted pix beside our bank of white tulips. He must have had major goosebumps with his bare feet and no top!
On a tech note, I mostly used the original Lensbaby for these. Mine was stolen in a burglary last year, but I repurchased it because I just love its effects and could always control my results more effectively than I could with a couple later iterations of this lens. I know the newer Lensbabies lock down focus, but that is too much control for me–I need the unpredictability and spotty results to get a kind of old Holga camera look. The pic with the frame, above, was in-camera, shooting through a dirty window with added texture.

Here are some words of wisdom from C’s mom:
You have three kids, and Mr C is the oldest. What do you think is special about being the oldest child in a family?
What was special for us was all of the uninterrupted time he and I were able to spend together before he was joined by his siblings. It was a sacred time for us….
Is Mr C in school yet? If so, what does he love to learn about?
C is in kindergarten at a francophone school and, as an anglophone, he is properly challenged. He is a bit of an academic already and enjoys reading (in both official languages), math, anatomy, geography, astronomy, and theological studies!
Did Mr C have fun at our little mini session? He was such a good study.
I think that he really did. I asked him on the way home if he was feeling a bit down today and he responded that he was “pretending to be sad for the pictures”. Perhaps we have an actor on our hands.
How does Mr C get along with his younger sibs? Do they get into his stuff?
Of course they get into his stuff, which is a constant source of chagrin for the boy. However, he is a very caring, protective big brother, especially when we’re out. He is attentive to both A and E and has a gift for communicating and enjoying them on their level.
What is your favourite thing about being a mom?
The sound of my children’s laughter. Discovering how their little minds work. Observing them make discoveries. Listening to their stories. Oh, you said one thing, I’d better stop.
What are your hopes for your children as they grow?
That they will find their bliss and that they will feel inspired to take good care of themselves, each other, and the world that they live in.
