And then they were princesses | Vancouver children’s photographer

Meet little Ms M and her little sister, Ms L. They were so excited to try out the princess set and sooo impossibly adorable…

The Jane Photo May charity drive is Parent Support BC. This is a great and longterm local organization where parents can turn for help in managing raising kids. How you can help them: Send your friends and family to this blog to leave a comment, and each comment during May will earn Parent Support BC $1. It’s such a little thing, but it can make such a big difference to a small organization. We are happy to send them a cheque for up to $200 at the end of the month, depending on how many comments you leave, so please be generous and help them out. You must leave your email to leave a comment, but we don’t collect them and they don’t appear on the blog. You can subscribe to the blog, above, or send us an email to be placed on our occasional newsletter list.

Here are some words from the Princess Mom:

Ms M (big sis)

Favourite colour:
pink
Favourite games: after imaginary games like Kung Fu Princess she likes Junior Scrabble
Loves: sugar. Or “sugary junk” as she calls it
Dislikes: soccer
Favourite music: Bobs & Lolo and Feist
Good sleeper? great actually
Favourite foods: sweets, hummus, bread and olive oil and a mexican dish called Pollo Salsa Verde.
Best habits: expressive, nice manners (sometimes), likes to read
Worst habits: doesn’t like to be thwarted

Ms L (lil’ sis)

Favourite colour: purple aka “poiple”
Favourite games: again, imaginary games and after that, Pengaloo
Loves: her butterfly blankie
Dislikes: being told what to to
Favourite music: Bobs & Lolo and the Beatles
Good sleeper? yes
Favourite foods: eggs (aka Aaaigs), strawberries and grapes
Best habits: gives great hugs, very active
Worst habits: doesn’t listen as well as she could, shrieks at an ear-piercing range that will make her father and I hard of hearing at a young age.

Tell us about your gals.

They’re both real characters and very different. M is six and in grade 1 and she would live on carbohydrates and sugar if I let her. L is four and she tends to eat only protein and fruits and veggies. This morning for example M had french toast and oranges and L had bacon and eggs and oranges.

What things do they say/do that utterly charm and melt you?

Luckily they tend to play really well together mostly. When I catch one of them looking out for the other that always gets me, whether they’re sharing, or patting them on the back or defending them. They also play the most amazing imaginary games that I love to eavesdrop on, I learn a lot about what’s going on in their lives from listening in on their games.

What things do they say/do that utterly charm and melt your husband?

He’s always a sucker for a big hug or being asked to read stories in “your funny voices.”

Do you think you are finished having kids, or are there more on the horizon?

We’re done. I was one of two so that seems like the right number to me. My husband was one of five, but two seems okay with him as well…

What is the best thing about being a mom?

The hugs and cuddles and the daily reminder to stop and smell the flowers – sometimes literally. Also, their very literal perspective on the world that makes me stop and reevaluate or see things from a different point of view sometimes. We all need that.

What is the most challenging part of being a mom?

Being on call 24 hours a day seven days a week. And the relentless monotony of thinking of healthy meals and keeping everyone organized.

Do you have any advice for other moms of two girls?

I always try and praise them for being strong and smart, not pretty. I also feel there’s no need for them to grow up too fast and they can dress like little girls and play little girls games for as long as possible, they have years ahead of them to start worrying about boys, and what they’re wearing and style. At this age it’s all about expressing themselves and discovering what they like.

Did your girls love being princesses for an hour?

They’re still talking about it. The dresses you have are gorgeous and they loved “taking tea” and riding the trike and exploring your studio. L was very intrigued by the pineapple and M now wants a boa.

Who are their favourite movie princesses?

Today (it changes regularly) it’s Belle for M and Snow White for L.

Big sis was heard to exclaim, re: lil’ sis, “My sister is a very.good.dancer.” I would sure have to agree…
