Branching out is fun! I loved this session making pin-up images. The feminist in me finds my attraction to this kind of shooting weird, but I have always been drawn to playing dress-up. Pretty sure there’s a drag queen somewhere inside me! Ms K was such a rare beauty–and lord knows just a great sport–and it was a pleasure to make her images. I made the images glossy and smooth like they might have been painted by Gil Elvgren in the 40s.

Today is Thanksgiving in Canada, and one of the things I am thankful for, for sure, is that a few less people are a bit less hungry thanks to my loyal blog followers. Such a pile of fun! Pin-up is a totally different way to photograph a woman…cheeky, playful, and totally sexy. I’ve spoken before about my feminist misgivings, but here we are, after all, in the year 2009. Back when the original pin-up gals modelled, they needed a husband’s permission to get a loan, buy a car, and even, sometimes, to cut their hair, but thank god, no longer. Women are doctors and lawyers and dentists and car mechanics…and sometimes, they just wanna kick it off and be calendar gals for a day!

We had such a fun afternoon on Thursday shooting pin-ups at Vespa Scooters and Sophie’s Cosmic Café on West 4th Avenue in Vancouver. What a hoot! Thanks to all the guys at Vespa, and especially to Vince who helped us out by stepping into a couple frames.

We moved from there to the studio, where I discovered I had been burgled. All my studio gear–lights, modifiers, softboxes, a snazzy Larson reflector–were gone, along with some favourite drapes for maternity shoots. And honestly, who knows what else? I didn’t have the heart to poke through the leftovers. Dishearteningly, it proves to be an inside job, since the studio itself wasn’t broken into. Not a great way to start the new year, I’ll tell you.

Sarah was in full pin-up hair and makeup and it seemed a pity to let it go to waste. Gary Deck of Gary Deck Photography was shooting with me, and happened to have come with his 580EXII, and a ringflash (which I used sparingly), saving the day. Any photo geeks out there know how challenging that must have been for me when I was planning 40s glamour lighting.

But I love, love, love these photos.
